NOMINEES

The European Years have been organised since 1983 to increase understanding, promote debate, and positively change attitudes on certain issues at the European level. For instance, 2013 was designated as the European Year of Citizens, and 2012 was named the European Year for Active Aging. The European Year for Development 2015 is set to be a special year, as the deadline for meeting the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (or MDGs) and for their replacements to be put in place. Also designating the year 2015 as the European Year for Development would be the first European Year to focus on a topic that lies mainly outside of the borders of the EU. Moreover, this year provides an unparalleled opportunity for Europe to engage with EU citizens, to showcase strong commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide and to inform them how every euro of support helps to make a difference in the lives of so many, in some of the world’s poorest countries. The European Year for Development 2015 promises to be a major event and will need the broadest support possible to match its ambition and its huge geographical reach. The motto of the European Year for Development 2015 will be “Our world, our dignity, our future”.
